Raleigh Picnic Society members enjoy a variety of perks, including discounts, coupons, and invitations to special events. The Raleigh Picnic Society Social Club is modeled after the London Picnic Society.

It is believed that the first picnics were actually luncheons provided for aristocrats during the hunt. As French aristocrats fled France for England during the Revolution, they brought with them their own culture and traditions. In 1801, two hundred wealthy young Francophiles founded the London Pic-Nic Society. These first picnics were indoors in rented rooms. They were very extravagant, and very expensive. Each guest was expected to bring a dish and six bottles of wine. As society members tried to out-do each other, the event included not only dining, but also amateur theatrics and sometimes singing, dancing, and gambling.
